Chemical extinguishing agents are the most commonly used extinguishing agents. They are generally stored under pressure as a liquid but revert to a gas when released. Most chemical gases are members of the hydrofluorocarbon family (HFC) and as such they fall outside restrictions imposed by the Montreal protocol on gases harmful to the ozone layer. HFC’s extinguish fires by interfering with the combustion chain reaction. They are suitable for use on live electrical equipment and in computer rooms. Chemical gases such as HFC227ea and FE25 both provide an extremely cost effective means of fire suppression.
Inert extinguishing agents are the most environmentally friendly gases available. An inert gas reduces the oxygen concentration in a risk to a level below the threshold where combustion can be supported. Inert gas systems normally require pressure relief venting to safeguard room construction. Inert gases are available at 150, 200 and 300 bar pressures and in 80, 100, 120 and 140 litre cylinders. Inert gases have excellent flow characteristics enabling the cylinder to be stored at some distance from the risk. Inert gases are able to be used in occupied spaces subject to design.
CO2 systems provide excellent cost-effective solutions for normally unoccupied areas such as switchrooms and printing machinery. These systems are reliable and inexpensive to recharge after a discharge.
Fast becoming the system regarded as essential for most risks, a water mist system provides an incredibly flexible and effective extinguishing/suppression package. Water mist systems are clean and compact and have easy and fast recharge capabilities in the event of a discharge. Systems are available in open and closed pipework types for automatic point detection/discharge or for full deluge. The minimal amount of water used in these systems makes them extremely “green” and ensures any discharge causes the least disruption.
Foam systems are generally used for the protection of liquid fires. Foam and water mixes are applied to fires in varying ratios to achieve extinguishment. Various expansion ratios give different blanket coverage for specific risks. A selection of foam concentrates and foam equipment types are combined to give the best and most cost effective foam system for any given risk.
